African Zulu Telephone wire baskets from a cooperative in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. A unique African Basket is the traditional telephone wire basket produced by the Zulus. The baskets are woven from the outside edge toward the center
Originally crafted of telephone wire, these baskets are colorful and fun. Produced primarily by men who have been injured working in the gold, diamond and platinum mines, the production of these baskets give the rural people an opportunity to make a living. Bright and colorful, these African baskets are a contemporary artform which originated as covers for traditional African Zulu Beer baskets.
The cooperative foots 25% of the cost of the raw materials while the South African Government underwrites 25% and the South African Telephone company donates the other 50%.
